Matteo’s 2nd birthday

On Friday, March 11, we celebrated Matteo’s birthday. He was fortunate this year; his birthday fell on a weekday. Our family-only tradition has been to celebrate weekday birthdays at Fenton’s Creamery. This year, Grandma Johnie, David and Aunt Jessica joined the festivities. As usual, we had a great time – the calm before the storm!

The following day we celebrated with 21 of Matteo’s friends and family, including our very special guest, Mommy Sara. She joined us around 2pm, and stayed till about 8pm. We cannot begin to express our gratitude for her willingness to maintain contact. Sadly, Grandma Kathi and great-Grandma Dot (aka GDot) could not join us; both were sick. Interestingly enough, we almost cancelled. For most of the week leading up to the party, Christopher had been ill.

So what’s new? Matteo is still mastering going to the toilet. He has been quite the trooper! His verbal skills exploded with full-on sentences – still waters run deep! The other morning, from his crib, we hear, “Daddy, my nose is leaving!” Poor thing had a runny nose.

Too long since our last post

But, frankly, we are very busy with, well, life.

Matteo is doing very well with his potty training. He wears pull-ups every day and sits on the toilet or stands next to it to do his business. Though we are quite pleased with his progress, he is still working on mastering the poop part. Sometimes we make it, sometimes we don’t.

Matteo turns two in a couple of weeks. Has it really been two years? In May, Christopher turns four. Time certainly flies…

Christopher seems to have hit a milestone of his own. He no longer throws a fit when we go to school in the morning. Of course, now that I write this, he will regress. Ugh. Seriously, though, he has been very mature about it.

The potty diaries – October 13, 2010

I am not sure if we are jinxing ourselves by starting the diary this soon, but today Matteo said, “pee-pee”, which honestly I wasn’t sure if that meant he had to go to the potty. We haven’t really been taking him regularly; on occasion, we sit him down on the toilet, usually at bath time. However, today, after stating as much, he started to squat. I quickly ran him to the toilet where he peed a little, and pooped a lot!

I hope we are on our way to a daytime diaper-free household.

Woohoo!

Of course, as a proud parent, I had to capture the moment. Gotta love the iPhone…

Hola

In my last post, I forgot to mention that as we headed to the store, Christopher was saying “hello” to passers-by. Then, all of a sudden, as we heard a woman speaking Spanish to her children, Christopher, out of the blue, says, “¡Hola!” Amazing…

11 months – where did the time go?

We find it difficult to believe that 11 months has passed since we brought Matteo home. Wow. In just one month, he will celebrate his first birthday.

At this stage in his development, he crawls everywhere. Whether he crawls or cruises along the furniture, he gets around this house with the ease of an experienced traveler. We suspect that he will be walking by his first birthday.

Matteo no longer eats baby food. He eats big-boy food. By the time he reaches his first birthday, he will be done with bottles. Yay!

Here is the interesting thing…except for teeth and hair, Matteo is developing along the same timeline as Christopher did at this age. Of course Matteo was born with a full head of hair, but until recently only had two teeth. Christopher did not get a full head of hair until long after his first birthday, but he had a full set of teeth.

Duck

For the last month or so, Matteo has been saying a few recognizable words. His first was, “Dad”, which really sounded like “Da”. At first, we thought he just might be making sounds, but he seemed to say it when we entered the room. Recently, he started saying, “hi” and “bye” as he waved to us or someone else. Impressive we thought.

Today, after I finished changing his diaper, he pointed to the picture above his changing table and said, “duck”. There was no mistaking it. He was very clear. I don’t find this surprising; during and after the change of a diaper, or the change of clothes, we look at the animal pictures on his wall, name them and mimic the sound each makes.

School days

Well, the walking stick insects did not do the trick today. Sadly, Christopher cried, calling for daddy as I walked away with Matteo. I called a bit later to check, and of course he had eaten a BIG breakfast, and was happily playing.

In the meantime, Matteo and I went to Peet’s for coffee – well the coffee was for me, of course – and breakfast. Matteo ate his yogurt, and when finished, stared out the window at the people, cars and rain. As we sat there enjoying our time together, Matteo’s mom, Sara, sent a text to check in with us. I took this photo and sent it to her. Hopefully, we will see her for Matteo’s birthday. Can you believe his birthday is in two months? Wow…
